A hanami is now an unmissable event of the Roman spring, which comes with the first sunny days of the season and has the taste of ‘rebirth,’ the awakening of nature.
I love do some picnics in the EUR gardens with my family!
The Japanese term means ‘to observe the flowers’ and bloom the sakura, the cherry trees that create a truly evocative atmosphere with their petals in the wind.
In Rome, there are several places where you can admire the blossoming.
The most famous and popular is the Eur lake, where Romans meet to spend a few hours outdoors among the trees in bloom, with walks or picnic.
Another enchanted place in which to see them in their full splendor is the Botanical Garden of Rome.
The visit to the cherry trees of the Eur pond is free, while the entrance to the Botanical Garden and the Japanese Garden is on payment.
The flowering period of the cherry trees is from the second half of March to the first half of April.
Hanami at the Eur pond
The most visited place in Rome where to observe the flowering of the cherry trees is the Eur pond, an artificial water basin located in the middle of the two carriageways of Via Cristoforo Colombo, at the sides of which there are tens of sakura, which in spring, with their white or pale pink flowers, create a fantastic scenario, typical of manga comics.
The main avenue, which runs with a driveway and a bike path, is called a highly evocative name, ‘Japan Walk.’ The homage is to the prime minister of the Land of the Rising Sun during his trip to Italy in 1959.
Reaching the Eur lake is easy: the park can be accessed from Via Cristoforo Colombo, Piazzale Enrico Mattei, Viale America, Viale Oceania, Viale Umberto Tupini. Using the subway, the nearest stop is on line B, getting off at Eur Fermi station.
